ABB to Upgrade Aluminum Smelter in Dubai

-- Business & Technology News, 29 May 2008

ABB won an US$18 million contract from Dubai Aluminum Company Limited (DUBAL) for additional electrical and automation system upgrades at the company’s 480-hectare smelter complex in Dubai. The order follows the $53-million order placed by DUBAL for this project earlier this year.
Under the terms of the contract, ABB will add one additional high-voltage regulating transformer (rectiformer, used to convert alternating current to direct current) rated at 100 megavolt amperes, to increase capacity in two smelting potlines. ABB will provide design, installation and commissioning services for the project, and upgrade the DC collector bar on two potlines. The delivery includes control and protection systems, as well two new ABB SCADA systems for the rectiformer station control.
“ABB’s proven track record of delivering results, combined with our comprehensive service and product portfolio, are crucial to the success of our customers like DUBAL,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division. “Over the years, our leading-edge solutions have helped DUBAL continue to grow their capacity while improving their productivity and energy efficiency.”
